The thing about overnight-icebergs…
If you’ve seen the movie Big Fish you know the thing about icebergs is you only see ten percent. Which I love as an analogy for my work as an overnight doula. Caring for your little one while you enjoy a much needed solid night’s sleep is really just the tip of the iceberg. So, what’s the other 90 percent?
Once, while explaining what I do to someone who had never heard of a postpartum doula I said, “I’m like if you combined Sookie St James, Ask Jeeves, and Nanny 911 - but for babies.” In other words, I’m the person who listens to you, answers all your questions, and helps you and your baby figure it all out. While working together I take an expert look at all the various pieces that come into play as we collaborate on building a solid foundation for your whole family.
Sleep, friend or foe?
I think we can all agree sleep is amazing, one might even say it’s a total dream. It’s the not getting it when sleep becomes a nightmare. And when you’ve got a newborn at home, sleep starts to sound like a fairytale.
Looking at the venn diagram of sleep related studies we see an incredible, albeit mysterious at times, overlapping mecca of psychology, sociology, anthropology, phenology, neurology, biology, biochemistry, herbology, medicine, and technology. Fascinating? Absolutely! Overwhelming? Yup.
I promise you though, you don’t need a bazillion degrees in order to better understand your and your baby’s relationship with sleep and bring joyful slumber back into the bedroom. That is where I come in.
Support highlights:
Providing developmentally appropriate opportunities for your baby to build positive sleep habits
Establishing a sleep routine that works for everyone
Education on infant needs, development, and sleep
Support in navigating sleep challenges
Planning for changes such as returning to work
Making sure you are cared for through all the ups, downs, twists, and turns of early parenthood
Getting the most out of it
I’ve found it’s most beneficial for families to work with me for at least six weeks. In that time your body will be healing, lactation establishes, you’ll begin to settle into parenthood, and your baby will be rapidly growing and learning. Which are all important factors that allow me to get you set up on the right path. When it’s time for you to graduate and me to say goodbye my goal is for you to be well rested and feeling confident that you and your baby are ready and able to continue getting sleep.
